2023.02.23 THE STORIES OF PECK'S DRIVE-IN PLUS CLASS NEWS

Peck's Drive-In, on West Markham Street, was known as the Shuffleboard Capital of the City. Peck's was owned by Velma and Jimmy Walthall.  Jimmy, who was at least 8 to 10 years younger than Velma (her "boy toy" so they say), just stood around the front looking tough while Velma ran the place.  She was described as a  "hard as rocks" dyed blonde!  Story is that one unfortunate teenage "guest" was giving her a hard time and before he knew it, she had him by the neck of his tshirt and she literally threw him out the front door.  (I'm happy to say I was never there.  In fact, I've never heard anyone talk about any girls being inside.  Is that right, Gaylon Mulkey????)

Peck's was described to me as small and dirty.  At some point they decided to remodel, cleaned it up  a little and enlarged it.  Then in the late 60's it burned to the ground.  Always a suspicious demise. So here's the first funny story.  You all send me some more.  It concerns Ray Alexander and Joe Crow, top students at LRJC () , who heard they were going to sell Peck's.  So these two geniuses thought/dreamed about buying it.  As Joe said, they couldn't buy a pair of shoes, but they were talking about buying Peck's for $10,000!  Obviously they were never able to do that before it went up in smoke.

Today a Taco Bell is located on those sacred grounds.
