The Icy Past: Ice Delivery in Little Rock before the Age of Freezers

A timely ad for ice delivery with temperatures getting hotter each day. Before freezers & ice makers, large blocks of ice were delivered to homes for storage in an icebox (known as refrigerators today) to keep their food cool.  Bet some of our grandparents had ice blocks delivered.

Arkansas Gazette, June 6, 1925.

In the age of modern refrigeration, it's easy to take for granted the convenience of readily available ice at the touch of a button. However, there was a time when ice delivery played a crucial role in keeping food fresh and cool.  Before the invention and widespread adoption of electric refrigerators and freezers, households relied on iceboxes as their primary means of preserving food. To keep their iceboxes functioning, families needed a regular supply of ice.  Years ago ice harvesting took place during winter when lakes, ponds, and rivers froze over. Workers armed with saws and ice picks cut large blocks of ice from frozen bodies of water. These blocks, weighing anywhere from 25 to 300 pounds, were then transported to icehouses for storage until delivery.   Ice delivery men, commonly known as icemen, had a strenuous task ahead of them. They would load large blocks of ice onto trucks, making scheduled stops at residences and businesses.  When the iceman arrived at a customer's home, he would skillfully maneuver the large ice block with tongs and deliver it to the household. :
