THROW BACK THURSDAY - PULASKI COUNTY JUNIOR DEPUTY SHERIFFS plus Class News

Pulaski County's Sheriff Tom Gulley, back when we were in the 4th -- 5th grade (there-about), inaugurated a program aimed at promoting lawful consciousness among youths.  The premier of its launch was held -- I believe -- at the Robinson  Auditorium basement, followed by a succession of smaller venues.  It was undertaken with lots of media coverage and  included a solemn "swearing in" ceremony, capped off with the issuance of a quite impressive looking -- though small --  breast badge imprinted with "Pulaski County Jr. Deputy Sheriff".  It was shiny silver and of heavy enough stock to feel "real".

I wish I had the ones issued to my brother (died just several months ago) and myself.

I'd like to hear from my contemporaries about whether or not they remember such.

Well, Mooser, I not only found a picture of the badge, I found someone who still has his!!!!  Unbelievable!!!  It's

George Clark, Class of '57.  Picture is attached.  Couldn't get it to copy for me.   Here's George's remembrances of

being a PC Junior Deputy Sheriff:

OK Mary Lou,

Tom Gully was the Sheriff. My father was heavily involved at the time with police

work.  He was one of the original Arkansas Rangers formed in the early 30's.

Later in the 30's, they became the Arkansas State Police.

I don't remember the exact age groups involved, but there were a lot at the few

meetings I attended. The idea was to give us the proper way to deal with any officer

of the law when questioned by one. Examples are:

1. Answer any questions truthfully.

2. Never run away from the police. You could be shot in the back legally.

3. Calling them Cops  was a no-no. They were police, Troopers, or officers.

4. Never argue with them.

Having that badge pinned on gave you some self-worth, good feelings about yourself

and wanting to set a good example  for others.

George Clark

I remember the badge very well.   It was certainly impressive.  I thought everyone was a

Junior Deputy Sheriff!   I don't remember the premier launch at Robinson Auditorium basement.

The thing I do remember from the basement was a presentation by the Army around the end of

the war.   I remember seeing soldiers lying on cots with very graphic battle wounds.   Of course

they were makeup of some kind.  Very attention getting to a 4 or 5 year old.   Odd things you can

remember after 80 odd years.   Now I have to go try to find what we decided for lunch.

OK, fellas, who was a Pulaski County Junior Deputy Sheriff???  And do you remember where

you met, what you did at the meetings, etc.  (Hey, wait, they didn't invite us/girls???)

The Junior Deputy program eventually morphed into a wonderful organized baseball program

replete with their own field with wonderful facilities at the foot of Cantrell.
