Each year on 7 Dec I vividly remember a Navy experience that I had in Pearl Harbor.
I was Ops officer onboard USS Sample (FF1048) home ported in Pearl Harbor. I had
been duty officer on the night of 4 Dec 1971. Early on the morning of Sunday 5 Dec I
was making morning rounds topside when to my surprise I saw a Japanese submarine,
with their flag flying, steaming into port, passing between our berth and the Arizona
Memorial. That sight is etched in my memory. Two days short of that day 30 years ago
when we were so viscously attacked. I thought, how things change in a shout 30 years.

1955 CLASS NEWS:
I'm responding for Richard Jenkins. He passed away on November 22. I'm a friend of Richard's and I'm
contacting people that he corresponded with via email. It looks like this is from his high school class. I will be
closing this account, but I'm trying to notify as many people as possible.
Richard was still very sharp mentally and continued to practice law part time. Unfortunately, he had a fall in his
house in October. He never really recovered from that. He had to go to assisted living but was only there for a
month before he passed away. He is survived by his wife, but she has advanced Alzheimer's. She is now living
in a memory care unit. At his request, there was no service. Unfortunately there was no one else, that's why I
stepped in. He was quite a character. I lived next door to him for 30 years. He always had lots of good stories!
