1956 Class News

Our sympathy to Elaine Evans and Larry Francis in the passing of their Granddaughter, Kaetlin, who fought a long and hard battle with leukemia. She leaves their wonderful Grandson who will now be raising their four children, one handicapped. Very brave people.

Jimmy Brown was class of 1954, A really good person. I first knew him at Pulaski Heights. I’ve never heard that he was deceased but that’s certainly possible. He had an older brother Billy and a still older sister Betty. His father was Jake Brown and his mom was a beauty, a very sweet lady. I spent nights with Jimmy who was my model airplane buddy at their house across the street from Tia Wanna which still stands today as an office building. His bedroom where I stayed is the front left gable of that building. West Markham had just been paved out that way in the middle 50s and Tia Wanna was the end of the line.

Jimmy was involved in a terrible accident on Markham at the top of the hill near McKinley Street west side of what became Park Plaza. This was all undeveloped land then still out in the country. There was a car parked partly off the road with two couples inside necking. Jimmy was going home, maybe tired, I don’t know, but hit the car which burned and two or three of the people were killed. Sad. - Joe Crow

Jimmy Brown was in the class of 1954. I was told he died but do not have the year. The last time I talked with him he was in Hot Springs living in Garland Towers. In 2014 the notice I sent about a reunion was returned. - Dana Booe Ritchie '54

Thank you ML. Greatly appreciated. May the new year be a Happy one for you. - Dave Duggan

Don’t know that I ever spent New Year’s Eve at the Tia-Wanna Club. The interesting thing about their old add was the MOhawk phone #. I had forgotten about those old 1950’s prefixes. Reminds me of the issues we had with the old party-lines. The old hand-dialed desk/wall phones of ‘dem days are a far cry from today’s I-Phones. Are smart phones a blessing or a curse? We used to dance to 45 records. I guess now the kids just wirelessly hook their I-phones to a speaker. I wonder what technology kids will use to dance by 66 years from now? Can’t believe all my nostalgic musings evolved from a MOhawk phone #. How octogenarian of me -Gary Frederick
