THROW BACK THURSDAY - ADAMS FIELD REMEMBRANCES plus Class News
Evidently last week's TBT about Adams Field hit the mark with a lot of you. These are too good not to share!
Marylou, An interesting, (if not gruesome) note the City dump was between the end of the main runway and the Arkansas river. The dump had a road down the middle. Some of The Central High scholars, (can’t mention who) would some nights set fire to one side and shoot the many, many rats that would run cross. A public service project. Thanks for your good work.

I used to go out to Adams Field in about 1960 just to see the Lockheed Electras crank up and take off; it was a big thrill for a yokel like me.

Remember flying from LR to NYC in the mid 50’ s from that airport. The route was LR, Memphis,Nashville, Knoxville, , Richmond, Roanoke, Tri-City, NYC. Stops at each town , up and down. As an individual with motion sickness, I had the brown bag in front of me the whole time. To top it off, it was protocol to get very dressed up for the plane ride: a dress and high heels. Oh well, looks like I survived.

Thanks Marylou, Several of us (your classmates) spent part of our senior year at Adams Field as part of the Arkansas Air National Guard. ; )

I'm sure this will bring back many memories to Frank Plegge, whose Dad had the Piper Aircraft Distributorship just south of the terminal. I'll always remember the times when Frank would pilot the aircraft ( along with an adult pilot aboard) and me. Once, he delivered ( and piloted) one of his Dad's aircraft to New Orleans. We stayed a few days with his Dad's friend who loaned us one of his old cars to "raise some hell" in N.O.. We then hitchhiked back to L.R. which took about 3 days and 20 rides etc. I believe Frank had been flying since about age 14.

1943, my extended family was assembled on the observation deck of that "administration building" one fading evening, there to watch my cousin, Guy Lepord, rev up the engines on his Martian B-26 Attack Bomber just beyond the gate, then pivot it around to taxi out to the runway, from there, with a mighty roar and blue flame flaring out of the engine manifolds, took off. It was his last training flight before shipping out (Europe). Guy and his sister Mary June were essentially the older sibling in my family, their father having died early -- my dad being the only "dad" they knew (and worshiped appropriately). Guy and Mary June were graduates of (back then) Little Rock High. We were all crying, even dad, understanding that we might never see him again.
1954, Frank Plegge and I, so often out at Adams field due to his dad's Little Rock Aircraft Sales, caught glimpse of the then world heavy-weight boxing champion Rocky Marciano, dining in the building's restaurant.

Thanks, Mary Lou! I do remember the Adams Field. Inside there was a nice restaurant, in which my Mom, my sister Ann, and Grandmother would often dine. Brings back pleasant memories....
