THROW BACK THURSDAY - MORE ON STIFFT'S STATION PLUS LOTS OF CLASS NEWS
Some responses from last week's story about Stifft's Station
I worked at that drug store ( then called Stifft Station Pharmacy) in the summer of 1952 after “graduating” from Good Counsel in May ( before starting West Side that fall.) I pedaled my bicycle delivering prescription drugs to older customers, mainly up on Kavanaugh with a few on Markham for 35 cents an hour !! A few of the wealthier, and older customers on Kavanaugh might “tip” me a Quarter sometimes. The high point of my employment was reading the store’s comic books while waiting for the next delivery call etc. This was mainly in the evening etc. My day started around 4:00 AM delivering about 150 Ark. Gazettes to customers in my neighborhood from 5th and Denison ( the railroad tracks) to 12th street between Denison and Park Streets. My life changed forever when summer ended, school started and I entered West Side ……………
Jimmy Martin
And believe me, the life of every girl in West Side changed when Jimmy Martin walked through that door!!!!

AND.....a distinctive thing about Stifft Station today is that most of the buildings there remain and several, most notablythe one housing The Oyster Bar at 3003 W. Markham freshest oysters in town plus a wide variety of other fish and meat dishes.

Stiff Station Barber and Beauty Shop was my hang out after school , 1st and 2nd grade at Woodruff elementary school! My Mom,Mary Lou and my Aunt Mace and Uncle Jim Erwin were the managers and popular hair dressers and Buice Drug Store was next door where George Wimberly was always in the know about everything! I was certainly enlightened at Stiff Station!

And my unforgettable story about Erwin's Barber Shop: How many of you remember going on Saturday to Mr. Erwin's Barber Shop to get the DUCK TAIL HAIRCUT!!!! Comeon, I know a lot of you remember BECAUSE I must have stood in line for an hour. Every junior high girl and boy musthave gone that Saturday for that haircut. Of course, it wasn't a style that looked good on me at all, but it was THETHING TO HAVE!!! There were two girls in my Class that looked great with that "Duck Tail" -- Linda McGrew andJo Lynn Hill. Having REALLY curly hair helped a lot. I've tried to remember what it cost to get that haircut. Couldn'thave been much. Lana, you can help with this? Would it have been as much as $5? Whatever it is I'm sure westarted his retirement plan! And speaking of George Wimberly, you're so right, Lana, if George didn't know it, it wasn't happening. I didn't learnabout him until I got involved in politics, but after that, I learned a lot and to this day I still hear stories that came out ofthat drug store.
