THROW BACK THURSDAY - BROOKS!!!! PLUS CLASS NEWS
If anyone wonders why Brooks never returned to Little Rock to live, just take a trip to Baltimore and it
will all be abundantly clear. I have grandchildren there. Brooks is a God in Baltimore - well deserved!
When my family there learned I had gone to school with Brooks, they treated me with much greater
respect!!!! Just as everyone also says here in Little Rock, in Baltimore they talk about how nice he is.
1956 CLASS NEWS
Our sincere condolences to Catsy Collard in the death of her husband of 64 years, Jim, a great guy.
The "full service" gas station referred to by Gary Frederick is one visited by myself and Jim Ashcraft. We made a deal with the
owner to clean out the oil change sump if we could have the old oil. He agreed. Depositing the oil in a 55 gal. barrel, we would
canvass houses along a dusty street and ask for $2.00 per house to spray their street with the oil. After collecting the money,
we commenced to do the spray job. The hot summer sun would heat the oil and allow it to spread and cover the dust along the
street thereby keeping the dust settled as traffic passed by. In one particular block of houses, we had a lady that refused to
participate. So, as we came to her lot, I would shut off the valve and open it again as we got to the other side of her property.
As a result the others in the block called us back to spread oil on the skipped strip, they had all chipped in to cover the cost.
Made good money that summer, dirty from oil and dust, but was happy with money to buy new clothes for the next school year.

I was driving a Nash Rambler with Kate Smith Chandler and Pat Glass (don't remember her married name) in the car with me, when a driver who was on his way to have his vehicle appraised after having a wreck, rounded a corner and smashed into me, sending Kate and me to the hospital. Pat was uninjured, Kate was treated and released, and I was kept several days (my head had shattered the front windshield) !!! But I don't think it long term affected me affected me affected me !!!

As freshman at LRJC Billy Wade talked up the Canton Tea Garden to me; I had never heard of it so we went for dinner. He told me they had “Orientals” there. I didn’t know what that was but I saw these people there we now call Asians. I had something pedestrian like chop Suey, and never went back. Outfront is a 1957 Ford, Chevrolets, 1960 and ‘58 and then some sort of Dodge thing.
That columned structure on the far right of the picture is on the NE corner of third and Main. It was a grand old building, dating way back, the USO in World War II and the Regional VA administration office after that until it was sadly torn down. My father worked there after he got out of the army and while we were at Lee.
Max Granoff was a Russian Jew whose family came from Eastern Europe with known history dating back to the 1700’s. I remember him sitting on his stool at the restaurant, rather toad like behind the cash register without much to say a kid like me. They served good food. The dish I remember best was two chicken breasts with all trimmings for $1.50, a special date dinner in the 1050’s. before a movie.
All the curb service waiters were black men. We had a couple of favorites. One was JC Amos, who went by “Amos”. He was good to go into the liquor store on the corner of the parking lot to get a $1.50 half pint for us since we were underage. The world was so different back then.
I cannot believe I don’t remember the icehouse, Gary Frederick describes located at 12th and oak. I guess it was just a little out of my territory to the east; my domain included 13th St., North and from Pine to the west. I did get as far east on 11th St. to the block between Oak and Maple where Joyce Fuller, Catsy Collard and Billy Glasscock lived. I knew North up to Maryland Avenue (ninth Street) where Barbara and Sandra May lived and Rodney Jones to the east on tenth. That about includes the entirety of my knowledge of local geography and people from 1944 until 1948.
I don’t know if you realize, but you are getting my life story in small segments. Treasure every word!
Joe . . . do you really need the last name? Sounds like a bird to me!
Yep. Remember having lunch there more than once with my Dad.

“ice boxes”, ice houses, Canton Tea Garden,” Blue Hole”…I recall all of those etc.
Benny Wise and I used to swim at “Blue Hole” which was a small lake near Fourche Creek south of L.R. as I recall ( ????)
Things like that are good for my “Alzheimer”” brain etc.

1955 CLASS NEWS
My whole family went to Canton Tea Gardens, from the alley; through the kitchen, to the dining room.
I was 6 yrs old,and scared to death of the owner because he was Asian. It was during WWll. The food was delicious at Canton Tea Garden, and I believe it was still open some past our High School years.

My Dad loved to eat lunch there (it was right next to Parkin Printing which he owned). They had great food and super service.

1953 CLASS NEWS
I know there are several in our Class who remember Lacy Frazier, a 1953 grad. He passed away August 1 and his obituary is in today's Arkansas Democrat Grazette. If you don't get the paper and would like to see his obituary, just let me know. Lacy was married to Jane Riser, also a Central High grad, for 66 years.
